The airport was originally named Kent County International Airport when it opened in October 1931. A year later, it was renamed to Cedar Point Airport after the nearby town of Cedar Springs. In 1943, the name was changed again to Grand Rapids Municipal Airport after the city of Grand Rapids took over ownership and operations. In 1963, the name was once again changed to Kent County International Airport following the construction of a new terminal building. In 1999, to reflect its growing regional importance, the airport was renamed Gerald R. Ford International Airport in honor of former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford, who was a native of Grand Rapids.
