History of Dog N Suds

Dog n Suds is a chain of drive-in restaurants in the United States, founded in 1953. The first location was in Decatur, Illinois. The company is currently headquartered in Lafayette, Indiana.

The menu features hot dogs, French fries, and root beer. The root beer is made with a secret recipe and is available for purchase by the gallon.

The chain was founded by Robert W. Tallichet and John E. Hamra. Tallichet was a World War II veteran and pilot who owned several businesses, including a food service company that operated concessions at airports. Hamra was an accountant and attorney who had experience in the restaurant industry.

The first Dog n Suds location opened in Decatur, Illinois in 1953. The name of the restaurant was inspired by a popular comic strip of the time called ” Our Boarding House.”

In the early years of the company, each restaurant was built from prefabricated materials that were shipped to the site and assembled on-site. This method saved time and money and allowed for rapid expansion of the chain.

By 1955, there were 15 Dog n Suds locations across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

In 1957, Tallichet sold his interest in the company to Hamra so that he could focus on his other businesses. Hamra continued to grow the chain and expanded into new markets.
